Santiago Munoz has ended the Maurice Revello tournament in great style.

Injuries severely impacted the 19 year old’s time so far at Newcastle United and it was five months after arriving on Tyneside in September that Santiago Munoz was finally able to play for the NUFC Under 23s.

The loan signing ended up starting five second string league matches towards the back end of last season, including scoring in a dramatic 4-3 victory over the West Brom Under 23s at St James Park.

At the weekend, Santiago Munoz started up front for the Mexico Under 20s in the third / fourth play-off match, meaning the Newcastle loan striker had started all five games at the Maurice Revello tournament over in France. Where 12 countries have been competing for what was once known as the Toulon tournament.

Santiago Munoz started up front in all three group games, helping them to beat Ghana 1-0, then unlucky to lose 2-1 to Venezuela. In the final group game and Mexico needing to win to stand a chance of going through to the last four, it was the Newcastle United teenager who got the key goal, putting his team ahead with a penalty (after Munoz himself was fouled in the box) in the 39th minute against Indonesia. Ruvalcaba scoring a second to make sure in the first minute of added time.

Santiago Munoz and his teammates reaching the semi-finals as the best runners -up, along with the three group winners..

Thursday saw the Mexico Under 20s play France in their semi and the hosts coasted to a 4-1 win victory, the big news from the game for Newcastle fans though was that French striker Hugo Ekitike picked up what looked a bad hamstring injury early on and was forced off.

On Sunday, France came back from a goal down to beat Venezuela 2-1 in the final with Hugo Ekitike watching from the sidelines, then celebrating with the rest of the squad afterwards, seemingly / hopefully pointing to no serious injury having been picked up on Thursday.

On Saturday it was the third / fourth play-off for the Maurice Revello tournament and Santiago Munoz and Mexico won it 2-0 against the Colombia Under 20s.

On 16 minutes Santiago Munoz setting them on their way with a smart back post header to open the scoring (go to 1.12 to watch it on the highlights below), then the Newcastle loan striker turned provider with an assist (go to 3.30 on the highlights) for Alvarez on 61 minutes to secure the win.

Great to see Santiago Munoz getting these five international matches and playing well, scoring goals and assisting, after a tough opening to his loan spell at Newcastle United. Hopefully he can hit the ground running when heading back to Tyneside for the new season.

As for Hugo Ekitike, with his international commitments now out of the way, you would think it is now very likely that this week we will find out if he is finally heading to Newcastle United or not, after NUFC originally tried to buy him the 19 year old (turns 20 in seven days time) back in January.
