Though Rayados came from behind to defeat América 2-1 on Saturday, the match was overshadowed by the tragic events that took place during the match between Querétaro and Atlas.
Following the match, Santiago Baños and Duilio Davino canceled the post-match press conferences and made the following statement:
“We are deeply shocked by what happened at the Corregidora Stadium. Out of solidarity with all of them, today we will not hold a press conference.
“Hopefully what happened is investigated and it doesn’t happen again. Today is a sad day for football in Mexico.”
At half-time in Monterrey, following the events in Querétaro, the Eagles released the following message on their social media channels:
“Club América regrets what happened in Querétaro. Football is passion and you live with the family. The sport and the rivalry stays on the pitch.
“The priority always has to be the safety of the fans and the clubs.”
All matches on Sunday have been postponed.
