Santiago Baños, América’s sporting director, expressed his annoyance after the Concacaf Champions League clash against Olimpia of Honduras where Jesús López was seriously injured.
Now, Baños admitted that he has considered removing América from the tournament since, in the absence of VAR, this type of injury can continue to occur.
“One (solution) would be not to participate, but we don’t want to go to that extreme, since the easiest thing would be to improve the quality of the referees.
“Yesterday, the referees were totally irresponsible, it is incredible that we do not have VAR in a tournament that takes you to the Club World Cup, it is unacceptable.
“The other solution is to see how the regulations are and see if there is an obligation to participate because sometimes you think about not participating and not losing players.
“It is complicated. Today, we have three players in doubt, another player with something fractured, and continuing in this direction makes it very complicated.”
On Saturday, América face off against Clásico Joven rivals Cruz Azul in a battle between Liga MX’s top-two teams.
