Germany are hoping to return to winning ways as they take on Portugal on Saturday. Die Mannschaft started their European Championship campaign with a 1-0 defeat to France – making this a must-win encounter for Jogi Loew’s men. A win should put them in a great position to qualify, especially with Portugal facing France in the final matchday whereas Germany faces Hungary at home.

Defence

Joachim Loew has no reason to tinker with his three at the back system despite a rather shoddy display against France. Mats Hummels had a mixed game, but his presence at the heart of the backline has evidently added more composure in the German defence.

Hummels, however, needs to be properly supported by the more dynamic defensive duo of Matthias Ginter and Antonio Rudiger. Ginter, in particular, has to cover a lot of ground, given how Joshua Kimmich tends to drift in centrally, meaning Germany may operate in a 4-3-3 during an attacking stance, with the defensive midfielder dropping in.

Nevertheless, the onus will be on the back three to provide protection for Manuel Neuer in goal. The Bayern Munich goalkeeper didn’t have a particularly great game against France, getting beaten thrice, so he will be hoping for a better night out against Portugal.

Midfield

Loew may have no other alternative but to continue Joshua Kimmich at right wing-back due to the lack of depth Germany have in that position. Lukas Klostermann is certainly not good enough to play at this level, so the Bayern Munich midfielder once again needs to step up his defensive game.

Robin Gosens remains a guaranteed starter on the opposite flank. The Atalanta wide player didn’t have a great outing against France but should get the nod ahead of Marcel Halstenberg and Christian Gunter.

In central midfield, Leon Goretzka is closing in on his return, but he might not be able to start. As such, Germany may have to continue with Toni Kroos and Ilkay Gundogan operating in the double-pivot.

Attack

Finally, in the attacking department, Loew might be tempted to make at least one change, with Kai Havertz making way for Leroy Sane. The Chelsea attacker was underwhelming against France, paving the way for Sane to start alongside Thomas Muller and Serge Gnabry in the Germany attack.

The Germans will be hoping that the Bayern Munich connection between these three could help them rip apart the Portuguese defence that is led by Manchester City stalwart Ruben Dias.
