Florian Plettenberg reports that Sandro Wagner is set to become the new head coach at Augsburg, replacing Jess Thorup.
Wagner (37) will leave his role as assistant manager to Julian Nagelsmann following Germany’s participation at the UEFA Nations League finals next month, having previously worked with the U20 national team.
Plettenberg further reports that Wagner and Augsburg have reached a final agreement, and that the German will sign a three-year contract until 2028.
Augsburg announced in April that they had parted ways with Thorup after analysing their season, where they finished 12th – nine points behind Mainz, who qualified for the final European spot. At one point, it looked as though the Fuggerstadt would go on to qualifying for Europe after an excellent run but without a win in their last five, they ultimately dropped off the pace.
From the off, Wagner was seen as their preferred candidate to replace Thorup, fighting off competition from other clubs to appoint Nagelsmann’s assistant.
