Sandro Tonali has been banned from football for 10 months after being found guilty of betting breaches.

The Italy international joined Newcastle for a reported £55m deal from Milan this summer and has made 13 appearances to date.

But Tonali is now set to spend a lengthy spell out of action as one of three players under investigation for gambling infractions.

An original 18-month suspension was reduced by eight months due to the player’s cooperation with the Italian Football Federation (FIGC).

In addition to the lengthy punishment, he has been ordered to pay a €20,000 fine and taking part in a gambling rehabilitation programme.

“The FIGC prosecutor and Tonali have reached an agreement which I have already approved,” confirmed FIGC president Gabriele Gravina.

“The agreement consists of a 10-month ban plus eight months of rehab activities and at least 16 public appearances.”

Juventus’ Nicolò Fagioli was previously hit with a seven-month ban while Aston Villa loanee Nicolò Zaniolo’s fate remains undecided.

Thursday’s ruling means that Tonali will not be available for the Magpies until the end of August next year due to the suspension.

The 23-year-old is also set to miss out on his country’s potential defence of their title at Euro 2024, should the Azzurri qualify.

However Tonali will still be free to train with Newcastle during his ban.
