Manchester United supporters won’t need reminding of what happened the last time the two sides met and therefore, the encounter comes as a doubled opportunity for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The Norwegian boss has come under heavy criticism over the last two weeks, with defeats against Young Boys and Aston Villa sandwiching two games against West Ham, with Solskjaer winning only the league game.
That defeat in Switzerland leaves United in a precarious situation in their group and the clash with Villarreal is already beginning to look like a must-win if they are to improve on their 3rd-place finish in last year’s Champions League.
Jadon Sancho was an unused substitute against Aston Villa but is likely to return to the side, having started both of United’s cup games so far this season. Donny van de Beek has done the same and could be offered his third start of the season.
Solskjaer is likely to make several changes to his side, with Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire unlikely to be fit for the game. Victor Lindelof will take the captain’s place whilst a decision has to be made on whether Alex Telles or Diogo Dalot replaces Shaw.
Predicted Manchester United XI (4-3-3): De Gea; Dalot, Varane, Lindelof, Telles; Fred, Van de Beek, Bruno; Pogba, Sancho, Ronaldo
