San Diego FC signs local talent to strengthen its MLS debut roster

San Diego FC keeps an eye on the market and announces the signing of goalkeeper Jacob Jackson. At 24, the player was selected in Stage 1 of the 2024 MLS Re-Entry Draft and has already signed a contract with the new franchise through 2025. A move that brings the strength of a local name to the team.

Jacob is a product of San Diego and knows the region's sports scene inside out. He started his career in the MLS in 2022 when he was drafted by New England Revolution as the 24th overall pick in the SuperDraft. Following some time with the club, the goalkeeper joined the San Jose Earthquakes in April 2024, where he made three appearances.

From San Diego to San Diego

What really makes this signing symbolic, however, is because of Jackson's relation to the city. This goalie grew up in San Diego, knows the streets, and how the residents enjoy their sports. Now, he comes back to defend the colors of his hometown team and might be the identification figure with the fans. In modern soccer, that counts for a lot. A goalkeeper who plays "in his home" earns confidence, and in a goalie between posts, that means everything.

Furthermore, Jackson arrives with important experience in MLS NEXT Pro, the league that has been a stage for new talent entering the MLS. Having played for New England Revolution II and The Town FC, he logged more than 3,000 minutes on the field since 2022, with nine clean sheets during that time.

Open space?

The arrival of Jacob Jackson reinforces a position that was already good with the presence of two important names: CJ Dos Santos, the former Inter Miami goalkeeper, and young Duran Ferree, who has already shone with the United States youth national teams.

A perfect situation for those who need to be stoked by internal competition: Dos Santos brings in experience and calm, Ferree brings in youth and a projection towards the future, while Jackson, in turn, fills in the middle ground: a young goalkeeper who is already used to the professional level. For a debuting club like San Diego FC, this can be quite a positive aspect of the team. A safe, motivated goalkeeper is exactly what every defense needs to feel confident in.

San Diego FC is still building its identity. With its debut set for 2025, the club understands that the first steps are crucial. The foundation must be solid. With preseason approaching, expectations continue to grow.
