Porto striker Samu Omorodion sent a barbed criticism of his former club Atletico Madrid off the back of scoring four goals against Malta for the Spain under-21 side, claiming that clearly they did not feel he was good enough. Omorodion is also averaging just over a goal every hour with Porto, with seven strikes.

The 20-year-old explained that only General Director Carlos Bucero spoke to him before his exit to Porto, and also questioned the idea that he was not forced to train alone by the club. However the war of words has been continued, after the content of some of Omorodion’s messages to Diego Simeone were leaked to Relevo.

Allegedly, Omorodion sent Simeone WhatsApps suggesting that he was keen to leave the club. These phrases were not the entire message, but a part of it, meaning they are out of context.

“At this point in my career, I don’t consider staying at the club to be the best option. I pray that they allow my departure to other teams. The Premier is my big dream.”

For months, it was said that Atletico were keen to keep Omorodion, and the Madrid-based outlet say they were confident of doing so until he changed agents in the summer. From that point on, that confidence was eroded, and after the messages, the club and Simeone, with whom the messages did not sit well, decided to allow him to leave.

The young forward was on the verge of joining Chelsea, before the talks broke down at the final moment. In the closing stages of the window, Omorodion joined Porto in a €15m deal for 50% of his rights.

Without context, it is impossible to judge fairly exactly what Omorodion’s intentions were, bearing in mind they seem like strange things to say to your boss. If they were appropos of nothing, then Simeone or the club’s decision seems a little more understandable.
