Sampaoli: 'We're more comfortable playing away'

Marseille coach Jorge Sampaoli could not hide his delight as his side swept aside Lens 2-0 at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis on Saturday night but admits that the former European champions play better away from home.

OM were largely dominant in the destruction of Les Sang et Or and the Argentine coach savoured his side's display by describing it as their 'most accomplished' performance of the campaign.

The win gave Marseille their fifth-consecutive victory away from home in Ligue 1 Uber Eats, a feat that Sampaoli puts down to how his side handles in-game pressure away from the Orange Vélodrome.

"We are more comfortable away from home, even from an emotional standpoint," said Sampaoli. "If we don’t score quickly at home, the match can become difficult for us. We need to do better because to be successful we must play at the same level at the Vélodrome as we do away from home. We owe it to our supporters."

The win at Lens was capped off by an impactful debut from new signing Cédric Bakambu. The Congolese international was introduced as a 74th minute substitute and opened his Marseille account just three-minutes later, with only his third touch of the ball.

"I think this was our best game of the season," added the Argentine coach. "You have to play at a high level to get any kind of result at Lens and we did that. It was a bit of a risk to play Bakambu due to his lack of game time but I thought that his speed could add another dimension to our game especially in the last 15 minutes. He's still not at his optimal physical level but I was very happy with what he contributed to the team."

Sampaoli will hope to get a similar performance from his side in the upcoming home games, firstly against Montpellier in the Coupe de France on Saturday before a clash with Angers in two-weeks time.
