There was no bigger culprit in Inter’s 2-1 Serie A loss to Roma yesterday than captain Samir Handanovic, and Andre Onana is increasingly waiting in the wings to swoop in and take his place.

This is noted in today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, who suggest that Onana’s presence behind Handanovic increasingly makes the captain’s starting spot in goal look under threat.

Handanovic had been praised for a string of excellent saves to keep his team against Torino just a couple matches ago, but the 37-year-old’s deficiencies were on full display against Roma.

Paulo Dybala equalized for the Giallorossi in the first half, but realistically the 28-year-old’s volley looked like it should have been an effort that the keeper should have saved.

Handanovic looked to have the shot covered, but was unable to deal with the pace of Dybala’s strike which passed through his fingers.

Now, where in the past there was no real threat to Handanovic’s status as the starter in goal when these moments arose for him, the opposite is true.

Onana was signed in the summer as the Slovenian’s long-term replacement, and the feeling has become that the long term may be getting much shorter after yesterday’s match.
