US women’s national team player Sam Mewis revealed she underwent a second procedure to her knee, delaying her return to the field.
The midfielder was initially expected to be sidelined for eight weeks after undergoing arthroscopic surgery to her right knee in August 2021. But 17 months later, Mewis remains unable to play.
“I am letting everyone know I had another surgery on my knee last week. I’ll be starting my rehab at home where my family can support me,” she announced on Twitter. “I gave everything I had after my last procedure in 2021. This has been a really difficult time for me personally and I’ve been devastated to be away from soccer for so long.”
The Kansas City Current showed support for the player by buying out her previous contract and signing her to a new deal through the 2023 season so she can “focus on her recovery and future.” Mewis then described the club as “extremely patient and supportive” through her continued recovery.
“I don’t have a timeline for my return to soccer, but I will give my best effort in my recovery as I always have,” she added. “Thank you to everyone for your support and well wishes.”
The exact nature of the player’s injury remains unknown. After joining Kansas City last offseason, she did not feature throughout the 2022 campaign. She was also named to the USWNT roster in March ahead of the friendlies against Uzbekistan, before later being ruled out due to a “knee issue.”
Additionally, without a confirmed timeline, Mewis is expected to miss the 2023 World Cup.
