Chelsea striker Sam Kerr has been named Barclays WSL player of the month for April, with Birmingham boss Darren Carter picking up the manager's prize.

Kerr scored four more goals in the WSL during April as Chelsea picked up three successive wins to move into May as favourites to retain their title.

The Australian forward scored twice in a thrashing of Reading, who proved to be a bogey side for Chelsea earlier this season, as well as goals in back-to-back games against Tottenham, both of which were decisive to the result overall.

Those goals also underline Kerr’s claim for the WSL golden boot, keeping her well clear of Arsenal forward Vivianne Miedema in the top scorer charts – she has already been named FWA Women’s Footballer of the Year to mark an outstanding season for Chelsea.

The latest manager of the month prize has gone to Carter, with his Birmingham side sparking into life in April and literally doubling their points tally from the entire rest of the season.

It has been a tough campaign for Carter and his Blues, who have since been relegated from the WSL for the first time. But they showed incredible spirit in April to go unbeaten across their two games and pick up four points – a win over Brighton and a drawn and clean sheet against Everton.

The WSL has continued into May and a dramatic final day of the 2021/22 season will play out on Sunday, with the title race between Chelsea and Arsenal to finally be decided. Manchester City and Manchester United are also still vying for third place, with others jostling for position in mid-table.
