Back in 2010, Salvador Cabañas was set to lead Paraguay into the World Cup in South Africa.
Things took a tragic turn for the worst for the former América in January of that year, as an altercation at a nightclub nearly robbed Cabañas of his life.
Just after signing a pre-contract with Manchester United, he was shot in the head and his playing career was virtually over.
Today, the 38-year-old has returned to football and was named an assistant with second-division side Cafetaleros de Chiapas.
“I’m happy to be back at home, I’m happy to be here in a different capacity,” Cabañas said.
“Before it was as a player and now as a coach and that makes me very happy, now [it’s time] to lift this team to the limit, which is what I want to do.”
Cabañas, like any great footballer, has ambitious goals.
“I dream about a lot of things, and hopefully, at some point, I can become a head coach, become a great coach, and why not make the [Paraguayan] national team.
“That’s what I want most.”
