Salomón Rondón admits he wanted to stay at Newcastle last summer but was never offered the opportunity to join permanently.
Rondón joined the Magpies on a season-long loan and scored 12 goals, however the club opted against signing him for just £16m.
They opted to sign Joelinton from Hoffenheim instead, which lead to Rafa Benítez taking the Venezuela international with him to Dalian Yifang.
“It’s about decisions and it wasn’t my decision,” he told the Athletic.
“If Newcastle had offered me a deal and said ‘Do you want to stay here?’, then of course I would have stayed.
“To be honest, last season was the best I’ve ever had.
“Not just because I scored goals, but because everything around me was so right, from the school of my children, to the city, the people, my family being happy.”
And when asked whether he would return to England he revealed he would love to rejoin Newcastle in the future.
“I hope so, one day,” he says. “If Newcastle made me the offer, I’d definitely come back!”
Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.
