Speaking in his first interview as a Borussia Dortmund player, Salih Özcan discussed his reasoning behind joining Die Schwarzgelben.

“When I heard that Borussia Dortmund was interested, that was also a wish from my side, my number one favourite, to play here,” said the 24-year-old. “Just like FC Köln, Borussia Dortmund is a traditional club, a huge club and always has ambitions of playing in the Champions League.”

With 95 Bundesliga appearances for Köln, Özcan added: “I’ve played against Borussia Dortmund all these years and it was always special to play here but now of course, it’s nicer to play here with the 80,000 fans behind me. This is of course something very special and I’m looking forward to it.”

Describing his playing style, the now Turkey international said: “I’m more of a fighter who sometimes goes where it hurts. I always try to give everything for the club, for success and I think that’s what characterises me, that I sometimes hurt opponents and show them where the limits are.

“I’m just trying to look forward to the time now and trying to be fit as quickly as possible and show the fans what I can do. I’ve been given the chance to compete with very, very good players here, I just try to bring my best to the pitch and I think, especially derbies, the fact that Schalke has been promoted is something special for the club, now we want to win derbies.”

When discussing his goals, Özcan emphasised: “I think my personal goal is simply to play games here, to show what I can do and what I’m capable of and I don’t think we’ve discussed our goals internally yet but I do believe the club has very, very high ambitions and is trying to get as far in the Champions League and to also make it difficult for Bayern Munich. I think there is definitely something in store next year with this team.”
