There are 10 injured police officers after they prevented a group of Salernitana ultras from attacking Fiorentina fans outside the Stadio Arechi.

The incident occurred just before the Serie A match, which the Viola went on to win 2-0 thanks to goals from Christian Kouame and Jonathan Ikone.

According to Sky Sport Italia, a group of Salernitana ultras tried to break through the police line to reach the bus of Fiorentina supporters.

They threw objects including fireworks and explosives, then turned on the police themselves, in a situation that went on for 20 minutes.

Police had to respond by releasing tear gas, which sent families and regular fans running into the stadium.

The result of the incident was 10 injured police officers, three of them having to go to hospital for treatment.

Salernitana rivalry

The rivalry between supporters goes a long way back to November 1998, when Fiorentina played Grasshoppers on neutral turf at the Stadio Arechi in the UEFA Cup.

Local Salernitana fans threw fireworks onto the pitch, striking the assistant referee, prompting UEFA to inflict a defeat on Fiorentina as the ‘home’ team.

This led to numerous clashes over the years.

Some Salernitana supporters also shouted insults during today’s minute’s silence for Mattia Giani, the player who died in a semi-pro match near Florence last week.
