Salernitana rejected Inzaghi resignation twice before sacking him

Salernitana have decided to sack Filippo Inzaghi following the team’s 15th defeat of the season, making it difficult to explain why they refused to let him resign twice in recent weeks.

The former Milan and Italy striker was dismissed by the Granata on Saturday following their 3-1 defeat to Empoli on Friday evening, their 15th loss in 24 games. The team sit rock bottom in the league table, having picked up just 13 points from two wins and seven draws.

Inzaghi failed to impress in the dugout at Salernitana, averaging 0.72 points per match across his 18 games in charge. Across all competitions, he picked up three wins, four draws and 11 losses, failing to take the team out of the relegation zone.

As detailed by TMW, Inzaghi twice offered to resign over the last two months and both times the move was rejected by club president Daniele Iervolino, who clearly changed their mind following the latest loss to Empoli.

He first offered his resignation back in December, when sporting director Walter Sabatini publicly stated that he ‘didn’t choose’ the coach, something that didn’t go down well.

The second time that Inzaghi tried to resign from Salernitana came a few days ago in a meeting between the coach and the club president, but it was again rejected.

Fabio Liverani is currently in pole position to take over from Inzaghi as the new Granata head coach. Other candidates include Luca Gotti, Massimo Oddo, Serse Cosmi and Davide Ballardini.
