Former Roma sporting director Walter Sabatini – whose current team, Salernitana, is getting ready to travel to the Stadio Olimpico for a Sunday league fixture against the Giallorossi – mused about his love for the capital club in a lengthy post on Instagram.
“Next Sunday, my team, Salernitana, of which I am and will be proud, will play at the Olimpico against Roma and I will be punctually hit by an emotional storm as soon as I set foot at the Olimpico because I will always feel for this team and club what some may define as ‘insane jealousy’ mitigated today only by the powerful desire to achieve important things in Salerno.”
“Despite this state of mind, however, I look at Roma’s season with sufficient detachment and impartiality which allows me to say that there is a sort of genetic mutation in the behavior of the team that no longer experiences victory as a possibility but as a necessity.”
“This in turn, is fundamental to grow and position oneself permanently among the top four. At this point of the season Roma are in the running for a European position in the league and fully in the running despite the first loss to Bodø (which occurred with -3 in temperature and on a horrendous pitch) for a trophy in Europe, having in the meantime identified and acquired an extraordinary player like Abraham who is already a popular hero and no city or club needs heroes more than Rome and Roma.”
“Many youngsters have found consistent playing time in the team and will be very important for the club. It was therefore a season in line and preparatory to the idea of a great Roma that is a work in progress. So, on Sunday, “let’s hope I make it out,” the primary school child would have written at the end of the school year.”
