Salernitana co-owner Marco Mezzaroma confirmed that he and Lazio president Claudio Lotito will be selling the Campania outfit in the coming weeks.

Speaking in an interview with Italian outlet RdS (via La Lazio Siamo Noi) earlier today, Mezzaroma discussed Salernitana’s promotion to Serie A and imminent sale.

In previous years, there were even those who insinuated that we didn’t want to take Salernitana to Serie A so we didn’t want to sell it. And I used to say: ‘If only we had this problem, it would mean that Salernitana would be in Serie A’. Well, now we have to solve this pleasant problem. Obviously, we’ll act with respect and within the framework of normality. But let’s be clear about one thing, the weak party is me, because even if we were to sell Salernitana, and Claudio Lotito remained at Lazio, I couldn’t buy any professional team, because we are relatives up to the fourth degree. Jokes aside, we knew about this, but it certainly shouldn’t be a question of proletarian expropriation, it’s ok that there’s an obligation to sell but not to sell to just anyone at any price. There are not only sporting regulations, there are also civil code regulations.

Biancocelesti president Claudio Lotito will be forced to sell Salernitana in less than 30 days now after their promotion to Serie A was confirmed earlier this week.

The Italian businessman took over Salernitana’s rebirth in 2011 – the Campania-based side were born in Serie D after Salernitana Sport and later Salernitana Calcio 1919 went bankrupt, with Lotito at the helm.

Lotito worked hard to ensure Salernitana’s growth, and used the side as a feeder team for Lazio as well, sending players on loan to the club in order to help their development, like Luiz Felipe and Thomas Strakosha.

The sale of Salernitana is likely to benefit Lazio as now Lotito’s sole focus will be the Biancocelesti, and he’ll be able to invest more heavily in the Roman club.
