Inter could be looking at this evening’s Serie A match against Salernitana as being even more important than knockout matches against Juventus or Benfica.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who suggest that the absolute necessity of securing a top four spot in the league means that a three points from a match against a “smaller” side are as important as any other objective for the Nerazzurri.
Had Inter not endured the torrid recent run of form in the league that they have done, then they would be in a much stronger position to claim a spot in next season’s Champions League than they are now.
However, four losses out of the last five have meant that the Nerazzurri face a real scrap to make sure that they finish in the top four of the league table.
Whilst there are clashes with direct rivals Lazio, Roma, and Atalanta on the way as well as a trip to Campania to face runaway league leaders Napoli, the real test could be the “small” matches.
If in a lot of these unassuming fixtures since the winter break Inter have slipped up because they haven’t taken them seriously enough, now that is not an option.
The margin for error is razor thin to reach an objective that is, financially speaking, completely vital in the form of a Champions League spot after 38 matches played.
Nerazzurri defender Francesco Acerbi summed it up by noting that “Every match is like a final” from now until the end of the season.
In the form of a Coppa Italia semifinal tie against Juventus and the upcoming Champions league quarterfinal tie against Benfica, Inter will have the opportunity to punctuate their season with some more glamorous exploits.
However, given the position that the Nerazzurri find themselves in in the Serie A table, securing three points against a team like Salernitana is even more important for them right now.
