Mohamed Salah has confirmed that negotiations over a new Liverpool contract remain at an impasse, with the Egyptian describing a potential agreement as ‘far away’.
The 32-year-old is in the final year of his deal at Anfield, meaning he will be free to negotiate pre-contract agreements with non-English clubs from January 1.
Despite his instrumental role in Liverpool’s success this season, discussions over an extension appear to have stalled.
Following Liverpool’s emphatic 5-0 victory over West Ham United on Sunday, Salah addressed his future.
“We are far away from that [a new contract],” he told Sky Sports. “I don’t want to put anything in the media. The only thing on my mind is I want Liverpool to win the league, and I want to be part of that.”
Salah’s performance against West Ham was another reminder of his immense value to the team.
He registered a goal and two assists, bringing his Premier League tally to 17 goals and 13 assists this season, the highest combined total across Europe’s top five leagues in 2024. Despite his age, Salah continues to perform at an elite level, driving Liverpool to an eight-point lead at the top of the table.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot downplayed concerns over the contract stalemate, expressing confidence in Salah and other players in the same position, including Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
“I think I have a lot of control over what they do on the pitch,” Slot said. “In their private lives, I don’t have control, but I’m really pleased with what Mo, Virgil and Trent are contributing.”
Salah has surpassed significant milestones this season, becoming the fastest player in Premier League history to reach 30 goal involvements in a single campaign.
His continued output has left pundits and former players debating the club’s handling of his contract situation.
As the January transfer window approaches, speculation over Salah’s future is only likely to intensify.
For now, the forward’s focus remains on guiding Liverpool to another Premier League title, but questions over his long-term commitment to the club remain unanswered.
