Why sell?

Many Liverpool fans would hurl at us with brickbats, but let’s be honest in saying that Mohamed Salah has been inconsistent for Liverpool. For every goal of the calibre of his strike against FC Salzburg in the Champions League, there has been a fair number of goals missed which ought to go in from a player of Salah’s stature.

Another negative trait of Mohamed Salah is his selfishness. We have seen his feud with Sadio Mane, and at times his lack of willingness to involve his teammates has cost the club certain goals. Although so far manager Jurgen Klopp has controlled the situation well enough, it remains unknown as to how long will he be able to do it.

Last but not least, Salah’s nature to shoot the ball from long range does not yield the result most of the time. When it seems like passing the ball to a better-placed man would be the wiser option, the Liverpool superstar often looks the other way.

Why keep?

Salah has so far completed two premier league seasons, winning the Golden Boot both the times. Even this season Salah is in contention of winning the Golden Boot, so far scoring 16 goals for the team, only three shy of Jamie Vardy. Hardly has any player from Liverpool has shown this consistency in terms of scoring, and the club simply cannot replace these figures with any replacement that they try to bring in.

Even taking into account the number of clear cut opportunities that Salah misses, he is capable of producing moments of magic that can change the complexion of the game. There are only a handful of players who can score a goal like the one he scored against FC Salzburg. With the kind of money Salah will fetch, Liverpool may get a more consistent player, but the club would struggle to retain that magic.

Final Verdict

Going out in the market to seek a replacement for Salah, even with a hefty purse, would be a cumbersome experience as Klopp would have to set his sights on the likes of Neymar and Mbappe. More importantly, with the trio of Salah, Mane and Firmino, Klopp has won the Champions League and now is on the verge of winning the Premier League. So, many may ask “Why change the winning combination?”
