Liverpool will entertain Atalanta on Wednesday night hoping to pick up maximum points at Anfield which will ensure their place in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League. The Reds managed to secure a dominant 3-0 win over Leicester City last weekend which will keep them in high spirits heading into this midweek showdown in Europe.

Jurgen Klopp could revert to a 4-2-3-1 formation and might opt for an attack-minded front four of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah. However, Naby Keita will definitely miss out on this clash because of a hamstring injury he picked up last weekend.

Defence

Alisson Becker will operate in between the sticks for the Reds after keeping a well-deserved clean sheet against the Foxes on Sunday. Klopp would have no choice but to opt for Joel Matip to play alongside Fabinho due to the recent injury crisis in Liverpool’s defensive department. The centre-back pair worked well together in their last outing and would be confident about keeping things solid at the back versus Atalanta in midweek.

Neco Williams could come into the side to function as the right-back while Konstantinos Tsimikas fills in on the other side at left-back. Andrew Robertson might get a rest following his heavy involvement for both Scotland and Liverpool in recent weeks.

Midfield

Georginio Wijnaldum will anchor the midfield alongside James Milner as they look to dominate the ball and create some meaningful openings for their teammates up top. The dangerous trio of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota will play just ahead of them as part of the Reds’ attack.

Curtis Jones will be available for selection on the Reds bench but could come on to add some energy in the latter stages of the match if required.

Attack

Klopp hinted that Mohamed Salah could be back for this upcoming midweek game against Atalanta after testing negative for the Covid-19 virus and is expected to return to training on Monday. If all goes well, the Egyptian international should get the nod to lead the charge for Liverpool down the middle.

Both Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi will make up the numbers on the bench as they await their chance to influence the game in the second half if Klopp decides to call upon their services.
