Mohamed Salah transfixed Anfield Stadium with a magical display against Manchester City on Sunday.

The Liverpool star was simply sublime as his team ran out 1-0 winners against the reigning champions and got the wheels turning in the right direction again after a shaky start to the season.

His 76th minute goal proved the difference – a deft flick over Ederson after a fabulous little turn on the halfway line got him past City’s last defender Cancelo.

And whilst the gravity of Salah's goal was enormous for the bigger picture at the club, it has significance on a personal level, too.

Salah closes in on Robbie Fowler's record

That's because the strike moves the Egyptian King above Steven Gerrard in the list of Liverpool's all-time Premier League scorers.

It was his 121st strike for the club meaning he has now surpassed Gerrard (120) to take second place.

Just Fowler, the Scouser fondly dubbed 'God' by the Kop, stands over him with 128 Premier League goals.

Now, should Salah keep scoring at his current rate of knots, it goes without saying that he will surpass Fowler's record this season, should he stay fit.

And that really begins to beg the question: Just where does Salah rank amongst Liverpool's greatest forwards of all-time?

His goalscoring record, taking into account games played, is second to none. Meanwhile he's also been talismanic in one of the greatest periods in the club's history.

So, to put it plainly, Salah will fare very well indeed.

Liverpool's 15 greatest forwards

15. John Toshack

Not your conventional Liverpool striker, certainly not of the modern day at least, Toshack was a domineering presence in the Reds' forward line for Bill Shankly.

He was signed for a fee of £110,000 from Cardiff in 1970 and soon formed a deadly partnership with teammate Kevin Keegan.

The two were likened to Batman and Robin at the time, with Toshack often turning provider for many of Keegan's 100 goals for the club.

Whilst the big Welshman himself nabbed 98 across his eight-year tenure - not the finest of returns compared to the rest of this list but Toshack offered plenty more than just goals.

14. Ian St John

St. John was signed by Shankly when Liverpool were still in the second tier of English football, but it was hardly a coincidence that within a season of his arrival they had romped to the second division title by an eight-point margin.

With St. John leading the charge, the Reds would earn an eighth-place finish in their first season back in the top-flight.

But shocked the world by winning the title the following year with St. John netting 19 times on route.

Another league title followed in 1965/1966 as well as scoring the winning goal in the club's first ever FA Cup triumph.

13. Fernando Torres

Torres at 13? We know what you're thinking, that is awfully harsh.

But then again, is it? El Nino was nothing short of sensational from the moment he arrived at the Reds and remains to this day one of the most iconic strikers in Premier League history.

Yet, it's very much a question of what could have been after he upped sticks and left for Chelsea in 2011 after just four short years with the club.

The Spaniard scored 81 times for Liverpool.

12. Roberto Firmino

It seems harsh putting Firmino outside the top 10, truly, he's been a special player under Jurgen Klopp.

Whilst he's not the fastest, strongest or the greatest goalscorer, he's a real asset to the team in almost every way, and without Firmino, the success Liverpool have experienced under Klopp would almost certainly never have happened.

As the boss once said: "Mo Salah, world class, but not every day. Sadio Mane, world class, but not every day. Roberto Firmino, world class, pretty much every day."

11. Michael Owen

Owen isn't remembered all that favourably by many Kopites, he did sign for Manchester United after all and when you do that you effectively burn every bridge you ever had with the club.

But we need to keep in mind what he did between 1998-2004. In 297 appearances, 'Wonder Boy' Owen notched 158 goals for the club.

That is quite simply staggering taking into account he was still a teenager for much of it.

Owen also remains to this day the only Liverpool player to ever to win the Ballon d'Or - and for that reason, despite never managing to win the league for the Reds, he's a very worthy member of this list.

10. Kevin Keegan

Keegan spent six years at Liverpool before moving on to Hamburg in 1977.

Within that timeframe, he was instrumental in guiding the club to three league titles, a European Cup and three UEFA Cups.

Not bad going, ey?

9. Billy Liddell

Fun fact: Lidell was a devout Christian, who never smoked, drank or swore. In his entire 23-year career, he never even received a yellow card.

That's pretty special. Although maybe even more impressive was his goal record.

The Scot scored a mighty 228 goals for Liverpool across 534 appearances. What makes that even better is that he would have scored more had it not been for World War II breaking out in the middle of his career.

8. Luis Suarez

Suarez could well have topped this list had he spent the remainder of his career with the Reds, or if not topped then he would have been a shoo-in for a podium place.

In terms of actual performance levels, the Uruguayan is in a world of his own.

His iconic 2013/2014 season was frighteningly good, so good that it might just be the finest season we've ever seen from a star in England's top-flight.

So, whilst he might have only passed through Anfield for a few chapters of his illustrious career, that was more than enough time for Suarez to leave a lasting impression that will live long in the memory.

7. Robbie Fowler

Liverpool's all-time leading Premier League scorer, you've got to be good to carry the name 'God' on your back.

But Fowler was more than up to the task and defined football on Merseyside throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Like Owen, his impact was immediate after coming through the youth set-up, Fowler quickly made a name in the first team thanks to his unique finishing ability.

Many an Englishman will testify to this very day that they've never seen a more natural finisher than the Liverpudlian.

6. Sadio Mane

Mane left Liverpool in the summer of 2022, departing for Bayern Munich as a bona-fide legend of the Kop.

Like Firmino and Salah, Mane was pivotal in everything the Reds have achieved in recent times including their Premier League and Champions League triumphs.

And even though he was technically a left-winger, the Senegalese star still amassed an impressive 120 goals throughout his tenure in north-west England.

5. Roger Hunt

'The Blonde Bomber' worked in perfect tandem with St. John and was even more significant in Liverpool's return to the top-flight.

He scored 41 goals as the Reds romped to promotion. A great tally, although one that pales in comparison to rest of his Liverpool career.

By the time his time with the club was done he had scored a monumental 224 times in the shirt.

4. John Barnes

Another one that, again, wasn't necessarily a forward but certainly could be classed as an attacking winger, 'Digger' Barnes was special, of that there can be absolutely no doubt.

There were fewer finer sights in the beautiful game than Barnes in full flight at Anfield, whilst his sweet left boot proved the downfall of many a stubborn foe.

Had he played in a more fruitful era of Reds history, he could have won countless individual and team accolades.

But he didn't, and so two league titles, an FA Cup and League Cup will have to do.

Despite his positioning on the left-flank in the traditionally more scaled back role than someone like Salah enjoys now, Barnes was still the league's top scorer in 1989/90 with 22 goals and swept the Player of the Year award for good measure, too.

3. Ian Rush

Goals, goals, goals, goals, and errr more goals. That just about sums up Rush, who is Liverpool's all-time record scorer thanks to his quite frankly stupendous tally of 346 goals.

He also won five league titles across his 15 seasons with the club and formed the most potent partnership Anfield has ever known alongside Kenny Dalglish.

In 1983/84, Rush bagged 47 goals and consequently became the first British player to win Europe's Golden Boot award.

That very same year, he won the league title, European Cup, the Milk Cup and a double Player of the Year.

2. Mohamed Salah

Salah over Rush?! Yup, we're calling it - let us explain why.

Rush was phenomenal, an outstanding goal scorer. But so too is Salah. In fact, if we're talking goal-to-game ratios then Salah takes the cake over Rush all day.

Salah has also been talismanic in Liverpool's rise to stardom under Klopp, arguably more important than any other star alongside Virgil van Dijk.

Whilst Rush was never necessarily the main man with that mantle falling to Dalglish.

And just to justify our point a tad further, we're ranking the greatest forwards for Liverpool, not the greatest goal scorers.

Salah contributes plenty more than what Rush did in the form of assists and overall gameplay, so for that reason, we really are opting for Salah as Liverpool's second greatest forward of all-time.

1. Kenny Dalglish

Number one was always going to be pretty indisputable, no?

'King Kenny' was brought in for a club record fee of £440,000 as a direct replacement for star man Keegan.

The pressure must have been unimaginable, but Dalglish shouldered the burden like it was his primary school backpack and started tearing English and European football up from the off.

By the time he was finished, Dalglish

He also scored 172 times for the Reds but his visionary passing, and general footballing genius meant he contributed so much more than that.
