Mohamed Salah isn’t going aywhere.

Months of speculation surrounding the Egyptian star’s future came to an end on Friday when Liverpool delighted their fanbase with news that their hero would be staying on Merseyside until 2025.

And when you’re talking about a three-time Premier League Golden Boot winner set to compete for the 2022 Ballon d’Or, then you really can’t understate the importance of said contract renewal.

Salah bags a pay rise

Nevertheless, it didn’t come without jeopardy because multiple reports across the British press were quick to claim that Salah had duly become the highest-paid player in Liverpool’s history.

It really did feel as though the Reds made an exception to their usually-strict rules and whether or not you agree with that course of action essentially depends on the extent to which you rate Salah.

However, just because Salah is the biggest earner in Liverpool’s long and illustrious existence, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they’ve caused financial mayhem in the context of a football as a whole.

And while it’s ultimately impossible to know with absolute certainty just how much footballers earn, we’re calling upon the data over at spotrac to try and answer the question with as much consistency as possible.

Naturally, too, the definition of a ‘winger’ is fundamentally subjective depending on formations and players switching positions, but we’ve settled for the players who star in an advanced wide role more often than they do elsewhere on the pitch as our criteria.

While there is some level of discrepancy amongst the forecasts of Salah’s salary, the general consensus amongst high-quality sources such as The Times and BBC Sport is that it does indeed surpass £350,000-a-week and therefore the reported wages of Sancho.

That does, of course, make Salah the highest-paid winger in the Premier League, which will hardly provoke too much fuss and outrage considering that he topped both the goals and assists charts last season.

However, the wage standings in football aren’t always immediately reflective of on-field performances with the likes of Pepe, Pulisic and Rashford having struggled recently despite their high placements.

On the flip side, the likes of Bowen, Mahrez and Son might be knocking on the door for a pay rise, while Salah’s teammate Luis Diaz has probably justified a place on the list in the space of just six months.

Ultimately, though, it’s the winners that everybody remembers in history and something feels right about Salah now taking his place as the Premier League’s highest-paid player in his position. Fair play, Mo.
