After over a year of intense speculation – and at least 6 months of widespread assumption that he would leave – Mo Salah this week signed a new contract with Liverpool.

The Egyptian was expected to leave on a free transfer when his deal expired next year, after he and the club couldn’t agree on terms.

It’s not clear what changed to make him sign up in the end, but according to The Sun last night it was due to heavy interest from Chelsea.

The Blues apparently started upping their interest in a transfer for the attacker, prompting Liverpool to raise their offer after a long period of deadlock. That improved offer was clearly enough to create the breakthrough, and now all parties can pretend they’re friends again and this was that they intended all along.

So Chelsea won’t get their man in the end – but they may well have caused Liverpool to break their wage structure in the end.
