Mohamed Salah is here to stay.

Liverpool ended months of speculation on Friday when they confirmed that their star winger had renewed his contract, signing on until 2025 with less than 12 months left on his original deal.

In a summer where the Reds have already lost Sadio Mane, the news comes a massive victory with Salah arguably proving the club’s finest male player of the Premier League era.

However, while they do indeed say that the best things in life are free, the next best things just happen to be really, really expensive and keeping Salah seems to fit into that latter category.

That’s because multiple reports in the British press have claimed on the back of Salah’s renewal that he will pocket wages in excess of £350,000-a-week as the highest-paid player in the club’s history.

There really can be no clearer indication of Salah’s worth to Liverpool than the club’s decision to rip up their wage structure in order to keep him on their books for another three years.

Some interesting results

It just goes to show that the highest earner in a workplace isn’t necessarily the star performer, even if some of these money-flush stars are indeed deserving of top spot.

For instance, it’s hard to have too many complaints about Ronaldo, Kane, Kante and De Bruyne topping their respective clubs’ wage bills when you consider that they’re all world-class players.

However, you’d be forgiven for scratching your head when the data also suggests that Walcott, Horvath, Mina and Lallana are leaving the biggest holes in their club’s wallet.

But then again, even the more deserving players – in terms of quality of performances, we hastened to add – lower down the wage bill at those clubs won’t exactly be feeling skint for pocketing five-figure sums every week.

Or in the case of Salah, you just have to hold your hands up and say that he’s worth ripping up the wage structure for. You just can’t allow once-in-a-generation talents like him to simply walk out of the door – fair play, Liverpool.
