Saddlers taste more opening matchday success

League Two Walsall made a winning start to their 2025/26 campaign with a 2-1 home success over Swindon on Saturday - to continue their impressive opening day tradition.  Evan Weir gave the Saddlers an early lead against the Robins, only for Will Wright to equalise for the visitors from the penalty spot with 79 minutes on the clock. However, Mat Sadler's side managed to find a matchwinner in added time at the end of the contest: full-back Connor Barrett popping up with a late strike to seal all three points.  The home side played with 10 men for the majority of the counter following Brandon Comley's 21st minute sending off, and Walsall fans will hope such a resilient display on Matchday One bodes well for the rest of the season.  The victory means Walsall are one of seven sides to take maximum points from their opening day fixture in League Two, and also marked the Saddlers' 13TH straight success on the opening day of a league season.

It's a winning streak that stretches all the way back to the 2012/13 campaign when Walsall suffered a 3-0 defeat to Doncaster.

What's more, the Saddlers are now alone at the top of this particular stat given Peterborough's 2-1 defeat to Cardiff City in League One at the weekend. Going into the contest, Posh were on a 12-game opening day winning streak...but saw that run abruptly ended by the Bluebirds.
