Ryan Kent has to win over Rangers fans for a second time

Yesterday Ibrox Noise reported on Rangers’ Ryan Kent being curiously given a new value by respected Dutch data site transfermarkt with the stats-based company curiously upping his numbers to approaching £16M.

The response this attracted from the majority was ‘is it April the 1st’ or ‘who wrote this nonsense’ (albeit in much more industrial language). They were simply disgusted at the idea that Kent, who it’s conceived has been poor form for Rangers in 2022, was allegedly worth £15M, and mocked the notion out of hand.

What this really shows is Ryan Kent has a LOT of work to do to win over Rangers fans again, with the majority extremely unhappy with him and his perceived workrate, for right or for wrong.

He hasn’t signed his new deal, he’s currently out of contract in the summer and he’s free to speak to other clubs next month.

Whatever the Dutch data site’s reasons for increasing his value to the region of £20M, Rangers fans for the majority far from agree, and consider him a player past his sell by date and time to move on.

Rangers supporters take an apparent lack of work and a lack of a signature very personally indeed, they take it as a smite on themselves, and on their club. So anyone defending Kent will generally be met with a barrage of opposition.

Which means if Ryan Kent is to stay, he has to win over the Ibrox support all over again, because right now favour and public opinion seems to be rather hostile towards him.

Now, equally, if Kent has two stormers in a row v Leverkusen and then Hibs, the reaction will be ‘I’ve missed that Kent’ and ‘needs to do more of that’ not to mention ‘sign the deal’. It will not be instant forgiveness but there will be a thawing, and us football fans generally are simple creatures. Impress us on the pitch and you will gain a lot of goodwill.

Kent hasn’t been doing enough of that this year, and Rangers fans are fed up with him as a result, but all it takes is a few good displays and the majority will be a lot softer on him.

That said, if he doesn’t intend to sign the new deal, he needs to make that clear now, because we do not want another Connor Goldson-type situation.

End of the day, the only one that can fix Kent’s reputation with Rangers fans is Kent himself.
