Ryan Kent ‘enters’ Rangers contract negotiations

So we’re finally here – according to Michael Beale, Rangers winger Ryan Kent and he are sitting down right now to have a serious chat about his future, something Kent himself confirmed many weeks ago would also happen.

It’s been told that there have been just some informal chats up till now, but manager Beale revealed some weeks ago that the next international break would see a proper sit down chat meeting between he and his young charge, finally to decide what his plans were, what the club’s intentions were, you name it.

Does this mean he’s staying?

Honestly, we do not know. We know there is some Premier League interest in him, with future PL side Burnley and current relegation-threatened Leeds both interested in him, as well as a lot of continental sides.

There is no lack of interest in Ryan Kent. But while there are rumours that he is simply a bit tired of playing his football in Scotland, equally he’s also happy and settled, with a Glaswegian girlfriend and a settled home life.

So he has to weigh up ambition and job satisfaction with what his family wants and what works best for him.

Money also comes into it. Chairman Douglas Park said there have been (informal) offers but he and fellow expiring star Alfredo Morelos want more than Rangers can give. We had source information Kent was demanding around £50K, which is well beyond our budget, but there might be a way to reduce that.

Either way the talks are supposed to be happening as we speak, the first proper negotiations over the next 10 days or so.

Whether they’ll yield positive results we don’t know, but the last time a player nearing the end of his contract entered into talks with the club, they were a non-starter, as Joe Aribo had no interest in staying and his heart was set on Southampton.

It just depends on what Ryan Kent’s demands are and whether those can be met by Rangers’ board, or more to the point, whether we want to. We’ll see if any positive news surfaces in the near future.
