Newcastle United wideman Ryan Fraser looks set to join Southampton, according to manager Eddie Howe today in his pre-match press conference.

The winger will join the Saints on a season-long loan with Southampton manager Russell Martin seeking more experience in his side.

Fraser’s prospects at Newcastle have been dwindling, with the player seemingly relegated to the periphery of the squad.

His game time from the 2022/23 Premier League season underscores the limited opportunities Fraser received, having accumulated a mere 311 minutes of playing time.

The 29-year-old couldn’t secure a consistent spot in the starting lineup, with just three starts and five substitute appearances.

The situation took a perplexing twist in the latter half of last season when Fraser was completely excluded from the squad.

He was relegated to training sessions with the junior players, showcasing a rare instance of manager Eddie Howe’s anger.

Rumours suggest that Newcastle will likely bear a significant portion of Fraser’s wages should this transfer materialise.

Remarkably, Ryan Fraser remains bound to Newcastle by a contract inked three years ago under the ownership of Mike Ashley and Steve Bruce.

There are still two years remaining on his contract, and there is no sign that suitors will be lining up to pay for him with one year left next summer.

One can only wonder if this move could mark a renaissance in the winger’s career or if he will struggle in the second division.

He does have Championship experience, which should help him adapt to his new environment.

Fraser will likely be Southampton’s fifth summer signing. They signed Shea Charles from Manchester City’s youth team.

They have also signed Ryan Manning and Joe Lumley on loan. They sold captain James Ward-Prowse to West Ham United and took Flynn Downes on loan.

Southampton will hope to get more additions through the door before the deadline day as they bolster their squad for the new season.
