Over the weekend, NJ/NY Gotham FC had another disappointing result since resuming the NWSL season at the beginning of the month. The Bats shared the points with Utah Royals FC, ending the match in a 0-0 draw.

Gotham FC honored Ryan Campbell

The result on the pitch was poor since the team is winless in their last four NWSL games. However, there was an aspect to Saturday that was more important than the game. Gotham honored the club's 2025 Lauren Holiday Impact Award nominee, Ryan Campbell. The goalkeeper, who recently signed a contract extension, was nominated back in May.

Campbell's choice for her community partner is Katie's Save. Per the organization, the "mission of Katie’s Save is to save lives through systemic changes at colleges and universities to promote mental health, protect students and prevent suicide." For those who do not know, Katie's Save was created after Stanford University goalkeeper Katie Meyer tragically took her own life back in 2022. In the aftermath, her family created the foundation to keep this from happening to others and to provide mental health support to student athletes.

In addition, it is clear by their work that it is not just to promote mental health among college athletes, but any student athlete, and overall, students. For Campbell, this means a lot to her since Katie was her teammate in college. That is why it was easy for her to choose Katie's Save and bring awareness to the East Coast.

According to Gotham, "Katie’s Save and Campbell are working together to bring the conversation to the New Jersey/New York region and to Gotham’s Keep Her in the Game community of girls, coaches and parents — helping adults support the mental resilience of girls while giving girls moments of joy and connection."

So, during the game against Utah, Gotham FC honored Campbell for her work with Katie's Save and raising awareness of mental health. The work she is doing is special, especially because there is still an issue with starting the conversation. The lack of willingness to talk during tough times, depression, and more is still a major problem. By bringing the conversation to the NJ/NY area, especially to those involved in Keep Her in the Game, the goalkeeper is spreading the word that it is okay not to be okay and that one can discuss what is going on.

This means a lot to Campbell, and it is good that the club recognized the work she is doing at the game. Hopefully, Gotham FC can continue to promote her and Katie's Save in the future.
