RWDM strikers showing signs of forming a deadly duo

Eyebrows were certainly raised when RWDM brought in former Oostende striker Makhtar Gueye during the summer. The 25-year-old Senegalese striker had shown his quality on the coast, but off the field there had been trouble. Oostende had shipped him off to Real Zaragoza, where he played 23 times and failed to score. RWDM believed they could get the quality out of him this season, and decided he would be the perfect partner for another former Oostende man in Mickael Biron.

Together, the two have scored seven goals this season, 70% of the teams goals. Their different play styles appear to compliment well, with the more diminutive Biron able to play off the tall Gueye. With the creativity of Xavier Mercier in the side as well, chances for both to add to their tally’s will certainly be plentiful.

The pairing have helped RWDM to a top 10 so far this season, a fine achievement so far considering all the uncertainty that surrounded the club during the summer. New head coach Claudio Cacapa clearly see’s the front two as integral to how they want to play and approach games.

What RWDM fans and staff will want to see is the two continuing to develop their partnership. There have been times in matches, especially int he recent clash with Gent, where the two could have helped the side take all three points. However, their link up play still needs some work, as at the weekend Gueye opted to shoot rather than square to a wide open Biron. Hopefully, as they continue to play together they will understand each others game and it should help both to get more goals and assists.

So far, the small sample side suggests that this has the potential to be a deadly duo in the Belgian Pro League, something that many other clubs will be envious of.
