Ruud van Nistelrooy has left his position as manager of PSV Eindhoven after a fallout with club authorities.

The 46-year-old accused the club of failing to back him. He told the club he does not feel they support him and the team.

Van Nistelrooy will not even manage their last Eredivisie match of the season against AZ Alkmaar.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker joined the club as a youth team manager. They promoted him to first-team boss last summer.

He led the club to win the Dutch Super Cup and KNVB Cup against Ajax in his sole season in charge.

They will likely finish the Eredivisie season in second place, with Feyenoord winning the title and Ajax in third.

Van Nistelrooy’s assistant, Fred Rutten, will take temporary charge of PSV for their final game of the campaign.

A club statement read: “Ruud van Nistelrooij has announced on Wednesday morning that he has stepped down as head coach of PSV.

“After several discussions about internal affairs the past few days, the board of directors had a meeting with Van Nistelrooij on Tuesday evening.

“It was decided to keep the focus on next Sunday’s match against AZ in Alkmaar, with further talks to be held after the final day of the season.

“On Wednesday morning, Van Nistelrooij told the first-team squad and coaching staff that he would be stepping down with immediate effect, due to a lack of support within the club.

“At the request of the board, Fred Rutten will now take charge of the AZ game on Sunday.”

PSV have financial limitations due to the absence of Champions League football. They have had to sell their stars to stay afloat.

They lost Noni Madueke to Chelsea for £35 million in the January transfer window, while Cody Gakpo joined Liverpool for £37m.

It is unclear where the Van Nistelrooy will move next. He could be an option for Feyenoord if Arne Slot joins Tottenham Hotspur.
