Own goals, set-pieces, and the Video Assistant Referee.
We can’t imagine this World Cup will ever be remembered for anything other than those three things.
They are, in a way, the holy trinity of Russia 2018.
Anyway, we’re now (just about) into the second round of group games and it’s time to update our daily Team of the Tournament.
Spoiler alert: it contains 12 of the tournament’s 37 goals (excluding own goals) so far. That’s pretty good going.
GK: Guillermo Ochoa – Made nine saves against Germany, the most of any goalkeeper in a single World Cup game so far. He just loves the World Cup!
CB: Diego Godín – Absolutely monstrous from first minute to last against Egypt and you feel he will be instrumental in everything good from a Uruguay perspective.
CB: Héctor Moreno – Was imperious at the back as Mexico won and kept a clean sheet against the reigning world champions.
CB: Aleksandar Kolarov – Scored a belting free-kick to give Serbia the victory over Costa Rica. Cristiano Ronaldo, eat your heart out!
RM: Hirving Lozano – Scored Mexico’s winner against Germany – a goal which literally caused an earthquake back home. This young man has a bright, bright future.
CM: Gaku Shibasaki – A stellar midfield performance against Colombia, Shibasaki was the standout player in Japan’s win. Brilliant on the ball and hard-working off it.
CM: Sergej Milinković-Savić – Showed against Costa Rica why he’s so highly sought after with a top class midfield performance. All aboard the SMS bandwagon.
LM: Denis Cheryshev – After scoring twice as a substitute in the opening game, Cheryshev was at it again versus Egypt. Joint top goalscorer with Ronaldo as things stand.
ST: Cristiano Ronaldo – We’re running out of superlatives for this man. A true big game player who once again carried his country almost singlehandedly.
ST: Harry Kane – Scored his first ever World Cup goals, one of which was a late, late winner to give England a priceless three points against Tunisia.
ST: Romelu Lukaku – Belgium’s all-time leading goalscorer Bagged a brilliant brace in his side’s 3-0 win over Panama. Always dangerous.
