Heading into the second leg of the 2022 UEFA Women’s Euro play-offs, all three ties could go either way.

In the end, Russia, Switzerland and Northern Ireland book a spot at the tournament.

Russia 0-0 Portgual (1-0 agg.)

After winning by a slim 1-0 scoreline in Portugal, the tie was in Russia’s favour as they played the second leg in Sapsan Arena.

Yet over the 90 minutes, neither side could find the back of the net. The hosts had the best chance to break the deadlock when Alsu Abdullina saw an attempt hit off the woodwork.

By the final whistle, a goalless draw proved to be enough for the Russians to knock Portugal out on aggregate.

Switzerland 1-1 Czech Republic (2-2 agg.)

Scorers: Sow 59′; Svitková 51′

Over in Stockhorn Arena, both Switzerland and the Czech Republic had the opportunity to take the tie into their own hands after a 1-1 draw in the first leg.

After a goalless first half, the visitors were first to find the net through Kateřina Svitková but then the hosts equalized through Coumba Sow eight minutes later.

Eventually, the match went into extra time and then the Swiss won 3-2 on penalties to book a spot in the tournament.

Northern Ireland 2-0 Ukraine (4-1 agg.)

Scorers: Callaghan 56′, Caldwell 90+6′

Heading into the second leg, Northern Ireland had the upper hand after winning 2-1 in Ukraine but this tie wasn’t completely over.

However, Ukraine were unable to find a way to turn their fate around and Northern Ireland beat them to a spot in the Euros thanks to Marissa Callaghan and Nadene Caldwell.

With the result, Northern Ireland have qualified for their first-ever major tournament.

Russia, Switzerland and Northern Ireland will now join Austria, Belgium, Denmark, England, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain and Sweden at the 2022 Euros.
