Russell Martin set to become new Southampton manager | OneFootball

Following Southampton’s Premier League relegation, the South coast club have wasted no time in sounding out their next manager.

Current interim boss Rubén Sellés will leave the Saints after his contract expires in June, and the Swansea City head coach Russell Martin is set to replace the Spaniard, as reported by The Athletic.

Martin will likely join the club as they return to the Championship for the first time since 2012, although no formal approach has been made as of yet. The 37-year-old was scheduled to fly out to the United States this week for discussions with the majority owners, but he remains in the UK.

However, there is increased expectation the former MK Dons manager will take over at St Mary’s and his appointment could be confirmed next week.

Martin guided Swansea to a 10th-placed finish, three points off sixth-placed Sunderland, who occupied the final place in the play-offs. His side won five of their last six games and played a fluid style of play, often keeping a high percentage of possession.

In fact, The Swans averaged 63.4% possession this season which is the second most in the division, only behind Champions Burnley.

Southampton still have two games remaining in the Premier League as they prepare to face Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium on Sunday before hosting Liverpool the following week.
