Russell Martin has opened talks with Swansea City over a new contract with the Championship club, according to BBC Sport.

Martin has been with the Swans for 18 months, meaning he is halfway through the three-year deal he initially signed when he joined from MK Dons.

BBC Sport has reported that talks have begun about a new deal but it appears the Swansea boss is relaxed about the situation.

“I will end up where I end up,” said Martin, via BBC Sport.

“People ring me all the time and say you are linked with this job or that, what are you thinking?

“I don’t care about that. It’s not on my radar.

“I would never come out and say I am going to be here for 10 years – I don’t know what’s going to happen.

“But if I am still here in 10 years and still enjoying it as much as I am now, I would be happy with that – and I don’t think that’s a lack of ambition.

“I think the biggest ambition you can have is to love what you are doing every day, because that’s not easy to attain.

“I am really fortunate to have that.”

Ashley Williams?

Yes No

Martin oversaw a 15th-place finish in his first year in charge and currently has the team sitting 8th in the table as the Championship prepares to return in full this weekend.

Swansea are level on points with QPR, who sit inside the play-off places, with only goal difference separating the two sides.

Up next for Martin’s team is the visit of his former club Norwich City, where a win would take the Welsh club above the Canaries in the table.

The teams meet on 10 December.

The Verdict

Martin’s time with Swansea has had its ups and downs but recent months have shown plenty of progress on the pitch.

Swansea have found a good run of form and a greater consistency this season, which has brought them towards promotion contention.

Maintaining this over the second half of the season will be a real challenge, especially with speculation surrounding some key players’ futures.

But he has shown enough during his own time at Swansea to warrant a discussion over a new contract with the club.
