Current Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge stated in a recent interview with Bild that when Pep Guardiola told him he was moving to Manchester City; the CEO was in tears.

Rummenigge recalled the meeting which was way back in 2015 and at the time, the club was still trying to get Guardiola to stay with the German giants.

The current CEO remembers the meeting fondly:

“One evening I will always remember: In November 2015, at a meal together, he told me that he had to leave the club. He needed a new challenge. Pep played with open cards from the start. It was an emotional evening; he cried, I also shed tears. That was memorable for me.”

He went on to say that he and Pep have a proper friendship with each other.

“Pep and I text each other,” he said. “He’s not a fan of WhatsApp. We wrote to each other on Christmas and New Year’s Eve, we are in regular contact. A real friendship has developed.”

With Pep leaving, Bayern had to find his replacement and they thought they had. In the form of Carlo Ancelotti and we all know how that turned out.

In an interesting twist, it is important to keep in mind that after him leaving Barcelona, Guardiola has no contact with the Catalan club, yet he remains good friends with Rummenigge.

With the current CEO set to call it quits once this season comes to an end, the last of the “proper” Bayern figures will be out the door.

With Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidzic together, Bayern is in good hands when it comes to the longevity of this historic club and we should expect the standards to remain as high as ever once Rummneigge leaves his post.
