While Rubens Sambueza will not fulfil his dream of finishing his playing career with América, the veteran midfielder has not ruled out returning to Las Águilas in a coaching capacity.
The 36-year-old Argentine was considered too old and too expensive in terms of salary to add to Miguel Herrera’s squad before the start of the Guard1anes 2020 season.
But while the Azulcrema may have jilted him in a playing sense, Sambueza does not bear a grudge and would be more than open to working on the coaching side of things in the future.
“If I could choose once I have prepared well, I would like to go to Toluca and America,” the former Argentina U-20 international told AS México.
“They are the two teams where I have played the longest, and one knows more about the fans, the philosophy of the institution, and what they are looking for,” the naturalised Mexican citizen said.
Sambueza is currently in his second spell on the books at Toluca.
He joined América in 2012 before eventually leaving in 2016, and helped the club to win two Liga MX titles and two CONCACAF Champions Leagues during his time at the Estadio Azteca.
