PSV have announced the signing of Ruben van Bommel from AZ Alkmaar. The Eindhoven club acquired the 20-year-old winger in what’s described as a “mega deal by Eredivisie standards”.

A deal with PSV was expected throughout the week, and the hype was accelerated when AZ left Van Bommel at home for the training camp in Epe. The winger has now signed a five-year contract.

According to the national champions, this move is not a transfer record, although Van Bommel is still believed to cost around 15 million euros.

Nevertheless, as Voetbal International explain, this is a “mega deal by Eredivisie standards”. PSV has never paid more than nine million euros for a player from another Eredivisie club (Ryan Flamingo and Arouna Koné).

The transfer marks Van Bommel’s return to his roots. The son of former PSV player Mark van Bommel, he played in PSV’s youth academy between 2013 and 2020 before leaving for MVV Maastricht and eventually AZ Alkmaar. At the AFAS Stadion, Van Bommel turned heads with a fine 2024-25 campaign where he scored eight goals and registered five assists in all competitions.
