Cristiano Ronaldo’s explosive interview with Piers Morgan has been a key talking point for the past week, even though the World Cup has started in Qatar.

Portugal are trying to focus on their own campaign which starts this week, but everywhere they go, there’s a media circus surrounding Ronaldo’s comments about Manchester United.

The 37-year-old’s future is now up in the air and it remains to be seen if he will be sacked by United as a result.

Ronaldo has already urged reporters at the World Cup to stop asking his teammates about the interview when they are trying to focus on winning the tournament this winter. He was too self-centred to see this would be an issue when the interview was released a week before the World Cup.

Portugal teammate Ruben Dias says it is time for Portugal to focus on the World Cup and move on from the media circus.

“I don’t think Cristiano’s affairs have put a dent whatsoever into what we are trying to achieve here, so I don’t have much to say about it,” Dias said, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News.

“I think we’ve talked about this enough, there’s not much to add. As a team we will focus on the World Cup now and not other issues.”

It raises the question whether Ronaldo is now having a negative influence on his international teammates?

Portugal take on Ghana in their World Cup opener on Thursday. They will also face Uruguay and South Korea in the group stages.
