Amorim initially revealed that the 22-year-old would be out for a few weeks, but has now come out to confirm the news that was in the air, but no Red wanted to believe. The Portuguese tactician admits that Diallo’s season could indeed be over with a dooming three-word response

“I think so,” said the coach in his pre-match interview with Sky Sports ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur.

This is a particularly painful blow for the Red Devils given the importance of the young winger to the club’s cause this season. The former Atalanta man has arguably been the club’s most consistent attacker since Amorim’s arrival in November.

The former Sporting CP manager also provided updates on the other players who are dealing with various physical problems, including several members of the midfield contingent.

“Illness, Amad was alone, [Manuel] Ugarte was a kick, Toby [Collyer] and Kobbie [Mainoo] felt something during training, Leny [Yoro] is sick… we have the kids. They have the opportunity to be on the bench and they are ready to play.

“Sometimes things happen and seasons where everything happens at the same time.”

Hence, Amorim was forced to name a makeshift starting lineup, with Casemiro earning a rare start in midfield alongside club captain Bruno Fernandes.

The bench will comprise youngsters who earned a promotion from the second team, in addition to Victor Lindelof.

Man Utd XI (3-4-3): Onana; De Ligt, Maguire, Mazraoui; Dorgu, Casemiro, Bruno, Dalot; Zirkzee, Hojlund, Garnacho.
