Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim will make the final decision on Jadon Sancho’s future if Chelsea back out of their obligation to buy, ESPN reports.
The Blues signed Sancho on a season-long loan from United last summer, with a £25 million obligation to make the deal permanent if certain conditions are met.
While the West Londoners are on course to meet the requirements for a permanent deal to go through, there are rumours that they may yet change their mind.
Chelsea will face repercussions if they do that. Reports claim the Blues will need to pay a penalty fee to get out of the deal.
However, it doesn’t seem to be much of a problem, especially with Sancho’s current form.
The 24-year-old had a blistering start to life in Chelsea colours, grabbing an assist in each of his first three games against Bournemouth, West Ham United, and Brighton & Hove Albion.
It did take until December for the former Borussia Dortmund star to register his first goal for the Blues.
However, once he got a taste of it, he seemed unstoppable, netting in back-to-back games against Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur.
It appeared Chelsea had gotten Sancho back to his best, but he has recorded just one assist since scoring in the London derby back in December.
Sancho has shown glimpses of the talent that made him a highly sought-after prospect during his early days in Dortmund, but he has regressed to his more familiar mediocre form.
Backing out of the deal looks like a smart move from a Chelsea standpoint, regardless of what it’ll take to make that happen.
The Blues have struggled for form and consistency in recent weeks, and Sancho is nowhere near the kind of player who can take a game by the scruff of its neck or pull them out of their rot.
Chelsea need wingers who aren’t afraid to take on an opponent and make things happen in the final third.
So far, Sancho has shown he doesn’t have what it takes to consistently deliver at the highest level.
Enzo Maresca has previously described Sancho as a ‘special‘ player, but he couldn’t be further from the truth.
If Chelsea had any sense, they’d send him back to United and let Amorim bear the headache of deciding his future.
