Ruben Amorim has underlined the importance of Manchester United winning the Champions League when it comes to the summer transfer window.
United are in Bilbao this week to face Athletic Club in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final. The victors, over two legs, will face either Tottenham or Bodo/Glimt back in the same Spanish city in the final.
Those who lift the trophy will also qualify for the Champions League, and with United enduring a historically poor domestic campaign - sitting in 14th with four matches to go - their only hope of returning to Europe's top table is winning the second-tier competition.
And, ahead of a summer transfer window in which Amorim hopes to make significant changes to his squad, the manager knows that qualifying for the Champions League will play a part, both financially and with the added prestige, for attracting players.
"Nothing is going to save our season, but this can be huge; winning a trophy," he told reporters.
"Being in the Champions League could change a lot of things in our club this summer.”
Manuel Ugarte was sat next to his manager in Bilbao, and agreed: "The history of United is written with titles.
"That is why we are focused very much on tomorrow to be able to play in the Champions League next season. All together, we are going to try and win."
There have been suggestions were a minority that the Europa League winners should not qualify for the Champions League, especially given United and Tottenham's miserable Premier League form.
Amorim has some sympathy for the view but believes a Champions League spot for the Europa League winners rightly gives value to the latter competition.
He continued: "I think it is the rules - it is hard to talk about that. You could see it is not fair because the best teams, the champions, should be in the Champions League.
"But you have this competition to give it a value to it. It is like in our league where you win the cup and you go to the Europa League."
