Manchester United closed the January winter transfer window with only two signings, bringing Patrick Dorgu from Lecce and prospect Ayden Heaven, much to the frustration of fans who felt there were many holes in the squad to plug.
The Red Devils could use a new striker to lead the line at Old Trafford, with Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee thoroughly underwhelming when given a chance in the starting line-up.
It is abominable to think about it, but Man Utd’s striking pair has only five goals in the Premier League with more than half the games played.
However, Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim revealed that the club was taking a patient approach in the January transfer window as they were afraid of being burnt.
Speaking ahead of the Man United versus Leicester City showdown in the fourth round of the FA Cup tomorrow, Amorim said (via Sky Sports), “What I feel is that the club is taking its time. We know the urgency of the moment, of the team, but I think everybody here doesn’t want to make the same mistakes we did in the past.
“We are being really careful with transfers because we did some mistakes.”
In the January transfer window, United have been guilty of making bad calls, like the addition of Alexis Sanchez in 2019.
Expanding that list to the summer transfer window, Man Utd have done uninspiring business recently, like the €75 million addition of unproven Hojlund and the £55 million signing of oft-injured Mason Mount.
INEOS arrived at Man United, promising to revamp the transfer model. They decided to be careful in January, preparing to set up deals for the more critical summer transfer window.
The Dorgu deal solves a critical squad problem that has plagued the club for years, and perhaps in the summer, Man Utd will consider plugging other holes, like the centre-forward position.
