Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim was present at the club’s executive committee meeting in Monaco on Friday.
It has been a whirlwind few days for Amorim and United as they lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night.
This led to Amorim suggesting he would walk away from the club if they did not believe he was the right man to lead the team forward into a new era.
The Red Devils finished the season in a slightly more positive way with a much-improved 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Old Trafford and Amorim gave a well-received speech after the match to the Old Trafford faithful.
He promised that “the good days are coming” and that next season will go a lot better than the one fans have had to endure.
The Athletic report that after the disappointing defeat in the Europa League final, Amorim immediately jetted off to Monaco to meet with the club’s top brass.
The outlet states, “it can now be revealed that Amorim flew to Monaco the Friday after the final and was, unusually, present at United’s executive committee meeting, which is a monthly gathering of the club’s ownership and executives.”
The implication from Laurie Whitwell’s report could be that the executives wanted to speak to the head coach before deciding whether he should continue in the role, although, of course, there could be a number of other reasons.
It could simply to have been to assure him his job is safe, to discuss the transfer budget and strategy or to set goals for the coming season.
In any event, the meeting was evidently a success for him as “Amorim returned to Manchester and told his squad on Saturday that he would be staying.”
Many believe the Portuguese will need to get off to a good start in the new season in order to continue in role but certainly for now, it is clear he retains the support and backing of United’s top brass.
Amorim will now need a big summer to rejuvenate his beleaguered side and it has got off to a strong start as Matheus Cunha seems moments away from being officially announced as a United player.
