Roy Keane has urged Bruno Fernandes to showcase his captaincy credentials by ‘putting demands’ on his Manchester United teammates.

The former Republic of Ireland was left frustrated once again with another poor showing from the Red Devils.

A 4-1 defeat to Newcastle United at St James’ Park saw Ruben Amorim’s men record a second Premier League defeat in their last three games in the competition.

Keane had already called out Altay Bayindir for a moment of insanity in the second half that saw Bruno Guimaraes capitalise on a poor goal-kick.

Despite being one of our better performers on the day, not even Bruno Fernandes was to be spared the 53-year-old’s wrath after the full-time whistle.

The former midfielder urged the United skipper to hold his “dishonest” teammates, including Diogo Dalot, accountable for their latest defeat in the northeast.

“To be fair to Bruno Fernandes he fronts up but to me it’s just soundbites now,” Keane spoke on Sky Sports’ coverage.

“He was talking about his team-mates and belief but what about his right-back Dalot who didn’t put a leg out to tackle? I hope he is pulling him in the dressing room because he keeps talking about having belief in his teammates but real good teammates put demands on each other.

“When I listen to Bruno, I have question marks about his leadership. He certainly isn’t getting any help around him, it must be tough playing in that midfield when the expectation is on him because that’s unfair on him. But when he’s doing his chats about supporters and this, to me it’s just soundbites. There is no meaning to it. I’m not sure this United group are an honest group.”

Manchester United need to back Ruben Amorim

It’s difficult to see how we’ll be able to make a raft of changes to the squad with the club’s finances still in disarray but we need to find some way of raising funds.

Ruben Amorim can’t be sent out into the 2025/26 campaign without having been enabled to craft a team in his own image.

It’s just not fitting of a club of Manchester United’s stature to have scored the sixth-fewest goals in the Premier League:

  1. 1st: Southampton (23)
  2. 2nd: Leicester (27)
  3. 3rd: Ipswich (33)
  4. 4th: Everton (34)
  5. 5th: West Ham (36)
  6. 6th: Manchester United (38)

Conceding the 10th-highest number of goals in the league is hardly any more encouraging either, and it’s unsurprising to see this statistic given the quality of defending on show at St James’ Park on Sunday.

The pressure may be on Fernandes to hold this group accountable, but really we should be pointing fingers at the decision-makers upstairs ahead of a make-or-break summer transfer window.
