Roy Keane got on well with most of his Manchester United teammates – but there was one player that he didn’t always see eye to eye with.

The former United captain was famously involved in a hotel bust-up with the legendary goalkeeper during their playing careers.

“We were grown men in pre-season, a bit of tension in the group, which can happen,” Keane told Gary Neville on The Overlap in 2021. “We were young men all playing to get into the team and for a contract. And Peter wanted a fight…

“I vaguely remember Bobby Charlton opening the door and seeing me and him…  But I think we won the league that year, so it helped.”

He added: “I came down the next morning and I thought ‘I’m sure I was fighting… I can’t even remember?’ And one of my fingers was all bent back…

“I think Butty [Nicky Butt] was on the scene and he explained what happened. I think Peter had a black eye to be fair to him.”

Roy Keane: Peter Schmeichel was overrated

On the same episode of The Overlap, Keane stated his belief that Schmeichel was overrated.

Asked about the best goalkeeper he played with, the Irishman said: “I suppose I’d have to say Peter but I still feel he was overrated. He was.

"I just don’t think he was as good as everyone made out. But he was very good.”

Keane was the guest on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football (MNF) this week and took aim once again at the former Denmark international.

Following Aston Villa’s 1-1 draw away at Nottingham Forest, Keane was asked by MNF host Dave Jones: “The spark tonight came from 37-year-old Ashley Young, the second-oldest player to score for Aston Villa in the Premier League. The oldest would be…? An old friend of yours…”

Racking his brains for a moment, Keane guessed: “Steve Staunton?”

Jones, with a glint in his eye, replied: “Peter Schmeichel!”

“Peter Schmeichel,” Keane said quietly before rolling his eyes.

He then added: “Did you say a friend?”

Ouch.

Roy Keane can hold a grudge

As if we didn’t already know it, Keane can certainly hold a grudge.

The legendary Premier League midfielder is still yet to make his peace with Sir Alex Ferguson, 17 years after the pair fell out.
